Question:
How do I say no and not make people mad at me?
This is a topic that many people struggle with in their daily lives. Some struggle with family, some at work, and some with friends. Saying no is a difficult thing when you are a giver and a helper. Being there for others should never be construed as a negative thing and being the friend people can count on, is a positive quality. It is when it does not feel good anymore or it is getting in the way of self care and personal responsibilities, that it becomes an issue. First of all, the main goal is to see that a person’s reactions to your personal boundaries you set are in no way a reflection of you. If someone is mad at you because you said no or are unable to help at a given time, that is clearly an issue within themselves. Unfortunately many people have a hard time looking at themselves so they project, meaning make it your fault or make you the bad guy. Your challenge is to know your limits and boundaries,
communicate them with kindness and respect, and feel secure in your decision regardless of the other person’s reaction. It will take practice and it will also be a lesson in finding out who in your life is conditional vs unconditional. It does not mean these people are not friends or good in your life, it just means you need to look at the energy you are willing to give them.
